We Should Not Be Friends
There are people in my life I’ve known for decades. Their lives have ebbed and flowed through mine. Sometimes a quick visit, sometimes a party night, sometimes serious conversation. They are always there and every time I see them I think I need more, or I need to know them better, or I should make time, and this book reminded me of that. Of college friendships and reunions and time spent together.
This book also partially takes place in the Bahamas, a place I love with all my heart, a special island called Eleuthera where generations of my family have spent their most happy times. It also talks about a place there (The Island School) and the person (Chris Maxey) who made it into a special place of its own. I have sometimes questioned his motives, or his way of doing things -- for a lot of the same reasons Will questions his friendship, and I loved reading about how Will and Chris came to terms with their differences to make a space for friendship. It was a reminder to look into people, to find the common space, and to open yourself to people and experiences and surprise yourself. Take a read, you will love it.
