Staff Review
“Giovanni’s Room” by James Baldwin. Review by Spenser.
“Our second Classics book club pick of the year was a big blind spot for me. In the past I've read mostly non-fiction from Baldwin plus If Beale Street Could Talk, which is tremendous, and Giovanni's Room lives up to its reputation. If you don't already know, the book tells the story of a young man in denial of his homosexuality through the tale of this one-time fling, which obviously was much more than a fling. Part mystery and part character study, Baldwin knocks at the truth of one's personal war within themselves. The pacing was spectacular, the depth of denial, word structure carefully constructed. Baldwin put his whole soul into this.” - Spenser
